Third World Express
Sunday Sep 18 - Sunday Sep 25
163 Civic Blvd, Braamfontein
Written and directed by globally acclaimed dancer, choreographer, teacher, writer and creative director Gregory Maqoma (we are huge fans) this musical production features an original score composed by Mark Cheyne and performers from the Vuyani Dance Company accompanied by the National Philharmonic Orchestra of South Africa. Audiences can also expect entertainment from some of South Africa’s best music and dramatic arts talents on stage.
A jazz influence is evident throughout with revived arrangements of local classics that include Hugh Masekela’s 'Stimela’, Letta Mbulu’s ‘There’s Music In The Air’ and ‘Soweto Blues’ by Miriam Makeba.
Third World Express also features some of the most innovative and most high-tech set designs presented in South African theatres. Meticulous attention has gone into the construction of the Third World Express stage, making use of all the outstanding state-of-the-art equipment at the Nelson Mandela Stage. After two years of limited productions the theatre has gone all out on this one.
Audiences will be transported from Grand Central Station in New York to Joburg Station and to Soweto using specially designed graphics mapped to eight LED screens. These screens include an LED proscenium arch and three motorised screens that move in various directions, allowing for a change of the stage's layout to suit the locations created graphically as backdrops to the action. Don't miss this world premiere at Joburg Theatre.
Third World Express plays out on the iconic Mandela stage from Sep 18–25 as part of the theatre’s 60th anniversary celebrations.
