The Zone @ Rosebank – a visitor's guide

05 Nov 2024

Nestled within some of the city’s most charming suburbs, Rosebank is one of Johannesburg’s most bustling districts. Known for its unique blend of business, leisure, and culture, Rosebank attracts a diverse crowd every day for work, shopping, and fun.  At the heart of this dynamic district lies The Zone @ Rosebank, a popular shopping destination that's perfect for fashion-forward crowds, weekend explorers, and anyone looking to enjoy everything the area offers.

With its open piazzas and interlinked passageways, its easy access to the Gautrain station, and the City Sightseeing Bus, The Zone is one of Joburg's friendliest visitor destinations.

From local fashion to international labels, and with cafés, a cinema, a museum, an entertainment zone for kids, and one for adults, and a variety of dining options, there’s no space for dull moments. To make the most of your visit, we’ve put together a guide of key highlights to help you navigate this exciting space. This is part one.

Where to eat

Akti
For a taste of the Mediterranean in an utterly elegant and picture perfect setting, head to one of The Zone @ Rosebank’s newest restaurants, Akti (opened October 2024) in the piazza. Specialising in southern European flavours with a hearty dose of Greek hospitality, this spot serves up classics such as rich moussaka, tender souvlaki, crispy spanakopita, and grilled octopus. You'll no doubt be surrounded by a super fashionable crowd who are intent on capturing the perfect selfie.

Fugazzi
Paying homage to New York Italian culture in Joburg, Fugazzi charms with its retro red booth seating and vintage posters, as well as sour dough pizzas and ice cream sundaes. We especially love the American diner-inspired additions like meatball parmesan subs, crispy chicken waffles, and blueberry hotcakes.

Mamasamba
From New York to the vibrancy of South America, MAMASAMBA is a standout for its indoor jungle with emerald tiles, tall palms, hanging greenery, and a winding staircase leading to an upper-level bar, just across from Fugazzi (they share an owner). The menu is a playful blend of Latin flavours with some Japanese influences in their nikkei sushi spiced up with chipotle mayo or smoked asparagus. And don't miss the bar's cocktail list – it has a bold and refreshing tropical twist.

Modern Tailors
Modern Tailors stands out with its bold burnt orange and navy walls, tiger print wallpaper, and pops of colour and texture. The real star? An Indian street food-inspired menu that honours the roadside culinary masters. Expect flavourful, earthy dishes with great vegetarian options that capture the essence of India.

MOMO XO
Next to Modern Tailors and part of the home-grown Momo chain (whose other branches include Momo Baohaus in Greenside and Momo Soko in Illovo), this Asian street food-inspired gem serves up delicious bite-sized delights, from filled bao buns and crispy Korean fried chicken to mouthwatering dim sum. Be sure to try their Cheung Fun flattened rice noodles with tasty fillings, as well as their open Asian-style pancakes.

Proud Mary
This ultra stylish bar and bistro is nestled in Hyde Hotel, The Bank. This modern eatery offers a delightful breakfast and lunch selection, including a “seafood raw bar” featuring oysters, ceviche, and sashimi. Don’t miss the juicy picanha steaks, salads, and a tempting array of small and café plates. Plus, the adjoining coffee bar is a must-visit for your caffeine fix.

For the coffee connoisseur

Speaking of coffee, coffee lovers are truly spoilt for choice at The Zone @ Rosebank. Check out the newly renovated tasha's, which features a New York-inspired menu of bagels, pastrami on rye, and Waldorf salad – uncomplicated comfort food with flair. For arguably some of the best brews in the city, stop by the renowned Father Coffee (next to KFC), where you can also grab a box of their finest beans, roasted in their headquarters in Kramerville. Coffee aficionados won’t want to miss their ultra-exclusive limited-edition brews, and there's a cosy bench outside to soak in all the buzz.

There’s also Bootlegger Coffee Company and their original blend with beans sourced from central Africa and South America, offering a delightful mix of toasted hazelnut, caramel, and a hint of dark chocolate, all blended to perfection. They also serve a halal menu. On a budget? XPRESSO Café on Oxford Road has been serving up coffees, pies, and croissants for more than five years, keeping prices unbeatable at just R14.

A choice of sweet treats

Satisfy your cravings with an assortment of international confections at Sweets from Heaven. Cool down with local favourite Paul's Homemade Ice Cream, or opt for a refreshing, slightly healthier treat at Yogurtland. There's also Krispy Kreme and their iconic Original Glazed® doughnuts. And if you're feeling adventurous, try the gourmet popcorn in unique flavours, including Hazelnut Rocher and Belgian Choc Mint, at Maverick and Jane in the upper food court.

For adult fun (no one younger than 21 may enter), head to Cracker Zac’s on the first floor of The Fun Company, an exclusive arcade and social hub featuring augmented reality darts, a retro arcade, and an upscale bar serving beer on tap and cocktails.

Hamleys Toy Store
Next to the City Sightseeing ticket office, it’s a world of play and imagination at Hamleys Toy Store, where you’ll be surrounded by the delightful sounds of squeaks, bleeps, whizzes, and chimes from an incredible array of toys. Established in 1760 by Cornishman William Hamley, who envisioned “the best toy shop in the world”, Hamleys truly lives up to that legacy with its mix of classic and innovative toys. The kids will love the Hamleys train that moves across The Zone at set times.

Museum of Illusions
For a mind-bending adventure, visit the Museum of Illusions (opposite The Fun Company). With a range of exhibitions, optical illusions, and hands-on displays, you'll enjoy a captivating visual, sensory, and educational experience that might leave you questioning reality.

The Fun Company
At The Fun Company, challenge friends to tenpin bowling or amp it up with hyper bowling for new adventures.
