Young emerging Durban-based actor and playwright Mphathy Shozi presents his latest production The Rise of Shembe at Roodepoort Theatre. Following on from his successful debut play The Wedding which delved into the dark world of drug addiction, Shozi turns his lens to Zulu icon and founder of the Nazareth Baptist Church Isaiah Shembe. Using poetry, choreography, and music Shozi traces Shembe’s rich ancestral history (his family fled from King Shaka during the Mfecane conflict period and his lineage traced four generations within the Ntungwa tribe) and meteoritic rise to the head of the largest African-initiated church of his time.
