The first event of its kind in Joburg, the inaugural Fire & Feast Butchers’ Festival, sponsored by Crown National, is a celebration of the South African meat industry. Envisaged as an educational, as well as culinary experience, visitors have the chance to learn about the various types, cuts and varieties of meat and the best ways to buy, prepare, cook and pair them.

More than 80 exhibitors are involved and there's also plenty of competition to enjoy including the National Butchers Challenge and the South African Free Flame Championships, which sees 60 teams sweating it out over hot grills to show their creative cooking skills in potjie, braai, shisa nyama and an American barbecue style. The winners will then head off to Ireland to represent South Africa in the World Barbeque Championships. Other attractions include a Beer and Braai Garden, Lamb and Mutton Kitchen, Beef Kitchen and the Wine and Food Pairing zone.

Note that on 31.03 the festival is open to those working in the food industry. On 1.04 and 02.04 the festival is open to the public (Sat 10:00–20:00, Sun 10:00–17:00).
