A cenotaph is an empty tomb or monument erected in honour of a person or group of people whose remains are buried elsewhere. In his one-man play The Cenotaph of Dan wa Moriri, Tony Miyambo delves into his own experiences of childhood and grief, to present a provoking, sensitive play that itself serves as a cenotaph to Miyambo's own father, the late Dan wa Moriri, conjuring to life the memories of the time the spent together.

Whimsical and unashamedly childish, Miyambo reconstructs key memories; from meeting his childhood girlfriend to painting the house and holding his first goat for slaughter, with sassy wit and tongue-in-cheek humour, bringing to life each memory with masterful storytelling. Painfully honest, he opens the doors of the past, and with a haunting countdown gradually allows the audience a glimpse into the pain, frustration and loneliness that comes with losing a loved one.

A tribute to the special relationship between father and son, the love, respect and loyalty Miyambo feels for his father resounds throughout. As Miyambo himself says "My father never got to see me on stage and every time I perform the piece I feel as though I am having a conversation with the audience, myself and my dad.”
