The Anatomy Lesson. A solo exhibition by Conrad Botes
The Anatomy Lesson. A solo exhibition by Conrad Botes
The Anatomy Lesson is the latest solo exhibition by Cape Town-born artist Conrad Botes. The exhibition title refers to Rembrandt's famous 1632 oil painting 'The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Tulp' in which the Dutch doctor is depicted explaining the musculature of the human arm. Inspired by this famous scene, in this exhibition Botes continues his explorations of biblical iconography and political commentary.

In his canvas paintings, silkscreens and 'photo drawings', the artist looks back at historical depictions of dead bodies in religious and political propaganda. The result is a bold allegory that addresses South Africa's violent history and the selective censorship and shock imagery of the modern media.

Opening event: The artist will be at the gallery for the exhibition opening event on Sat Sep 4 from 11:00.
