This weekend The Bioscope presents Storylines, a selection of Aboriginal feature films and documentaries, brought to African screens with the help of the Australian High Commission. Entrance to all films is free.

Apr 22 at 15:00. Fire Walker
A documentary about the life and times of Charles Perkins (1936-2000), an Aboriginal activist and bureaucrat who was on the frontline of the emerging Aboriginal rights movement.

Apr 22 at 17:00. Mabo
A docudrama film based on the life story of Eddie ‘Koiki’ Mabo. In 1973 Mabo was shocked to discover that the ownership of the land his ancestors had passed down on Murray Island in the Torres Strait Islands for over 16 generations, was not legally recognised as theirs. Rather than accept this injustice, he began an epic fight for Australian law to recognise traditional land rights. Eddie never lived to see his land returned to him, but the name Mabo is known in every household throughout the country.

Apr 22 at 19:00. The Sapphires
Inspired by the hit stage-play of the same name, this uplifting musical film follows the story of an Aboriginal girl group, The Sapphires, dubbed 'Australia’s answer to The Supremes'. Loosely based on a true story.

Apr 23 at 15:00. Black Panther Woman
A documentary film about the extraordinary life of Marlene Cummins, who was once part of the little known Brisbane chapter of the Black Panther Party.

Apr 23 at 17:00. Bran Nue Dae
Set in 1969 this comedy musical road movie follows the adventures of an Aboriginal teenager who runs away from a remote religious mission and sets out on a 2,500km journey across the Australian outback in the company of a band of hippies.

Apr 23 at 19:00. Samson and Delilah
Described as a "survival love story" this drama centres around two indigenous Australian 14-year-olds living in a remote Aboriginal community who steal a car and escape their difficult lives by going to Alice Springs. Winner of the Camera D' Or at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival.
