'Sikelela... the Road to the Barbican' at Market Theatre
Saturday Nov 9 15:00
Cnr Lilian Ngoyi St and Miriam Makeba St, Newtown
Sikelela... the Road to the Barbican takes its cue from the first phrase of the South African national anthem. Inspired by the isiXhosa word that means "blessed", the production is a celebration of ingoma – "song" – as "liberation in action".
This special concert brings avant-garde musicians to the stage for matinee and evening performances. The line-up is curated by The Brother Moves On’s Siyabonga Mthembu and pianist, composer, and singer Thandi Ntuli.
Litsomo opens the matinee show – a collaborative project by indie folk storytellers Leomile, Muneyi, and KekeLingo. Then Bokani Dyer and Andile Yenana come together to showcase the beauty of keys and synths. The Brother Moves On, featuring Tumi Mogorosi and Malcolm Jiyane, closes the matinee show and plays again in the evening performance. Buhlebendalo opens the second series of acts, while Maleh, the "Musical Queen of Maseru", rounds it out.
"Sikelela… the Road to the Barbican is the precursor to a celebration of South African jazz at the Barbican Centre in London as part of the London Jazz Festival in November," says co-curator Mthembu. The title for the London show, Sikelela, Thirty Years On, is a reference to South Africa's three decades of freedom and democracy.
The matinee for Sikelela... the Road to the Barbican begins at 15:00 (PG-friendly) and the evening show starts at 19:00 (no under 18s) on Sat, Nov 9 at the Market Theatre in Newtown. Book your tickets here.
