As part of the IFAS (Institut Francais) Research department's Experimenting/ Experiencing the City series, The Bioscope independent cinema presents four documentary films that focus specifically on daily life in Joburg's most challenging urban areas.

May 11 at 19:30 Soweto Times of Wrath (60min)
Captured on film by a sextet of young Sowetan filmmakers, this gritty 2016 film is an intensely relevant and urgent documentary that shines a spotlight squarely on unrest in South Africa's largest township Soweto. The film deftly weaves together the stories of ordinary activists with those of illegal miners dodging police bullets, communities battling a drug addiction epidemic and Kliptown shack dwellers trying desperately to be heard.

May 12 at 19:30 Unhinged: Surviving Jo'Burg (52min)
An honest, quirky (and sometimes manic) documentary-style film about life in Joburg from 2010. A very entertaining take on the story of the city, the film mixes rapid narrative, dry black humour, trivial factoids, insightful observations and a highly enjoyable soundtrack.

May 13 at 20:00 The Battle For Johannesburg (71min)
Rehad Desai's (The Giant Is Falling, Miners Shot Down) 2010 documentary looks at the 'battle' for control of the Joburg inner-city ahead of the 2010 football World Cup. Desai turns his camera lens to the uglier side of urban regeneration focusing on unscrupulous slum lords and the appalling living conditions of their residents and the (often violent) efforts to evict them, juxtaposing this with the lofty ambitions of property developers who dream of transforming derelict buildings. Seven years down the line it is particularly interesting to see what has changed within the city since Desai's film was first released.

May 14 at 19:00 Africa Shafted (55min)
Ingrid Martens 2011 documentary is serious, poignant, humorous, and uplifting. Filmed almost entirely inside the lifts that run up and down the 50 floors of the Ponte building, the tallest residential building in Africa, the film looks in particular at the experiences of African migrants from other parts of the continent who have made Joburg their home and the often violent xenophobia that they face.
