The iconic Tony award-nominated musical Sarafina! returns to the Joburg Theatre stage by popular demand. Written by renowned South African playwright Mbongeni Ngema and based on his eponymous book, the musical Sarafina! first premiered at The Market Theatre in 1987 before taking to Broadway in 1988. It also became a Blockbuster Hollywood film starring  Whoopi Goldberg and South African music icon Miriam Makeba.

Set during the 1976 Soweto Riots, Sarafina! follows schoolgirl activist Sarafina and her classmates as they plan to challenge the Apartheid government and reject Afrikaans as a medium of instruction.

This high-energy production of the much-loved play is directed by Dr Mbongeni Ngema himself, who also incorporated music specially composed by Hugh Masekela into the production. Starring a supremely talented young local cast, this is perfect entertainment for Youth Month and a musical that is sure to delight and inspire audiences of all ages.
