Gaylard says he had been thinking about doing a book with buildings throughout South Africa for a while – and as with many other people he unexpectedly found his opportunity to work on it. He already had an extensive list of the buildings he wanted to draw by the time of the first lockdown. The time the lockdown afforded him meant that he was finally able to sit down and begin his project of drawing one building a day, for one year.
The result is a beautifully made coffee-table book. The drawings are meticulously detailed and are a pleasure to go through and it's fun to find buildings you know and love. The essays by McDougall offer valuable insights on the buildings and when taken as a whole give a fantastic overview of the architectural legacy of South Africa.
The book launches at the Rand Club, 33 Loveday St, Marshalltown, on Sat, Sep 10 at 11:00. The authors will discuss the inspiration behind the book and their relationships to South African architecture. This will be followed by a walkabout through the Rand Club with Brett McDougall at 12:30.
