'Points of View' by Alastair Findlay and Elizabeth Davison at Stokvel Gallery
Friday Oct 25 - Sunday Oct 27
76a 4th Ave, Melville, Johannesburg
The "unsung beauty" of Joburg is what artist Alastair Findlay celebrates in his characterful work. We recently chatted to him for our #MyJoburg interview series about painting the city, and you can read the Q&A here. "Findlay's unique perspectives arise from working in situ, finding unusual vantage points in our familiar environment," reads his artist's statement. "Sitting on a Jan Smuts Avenue traffic island during rush hour or working on the Melville Koppies in the morning drizzle all form part of his daily practice." Over time, Findlay's drawings and watercolours have become more geological and botanical, revealing his fascination with how the indigenous landscape pushes through into the built environment.
In contrast, Elizabeth Davison's work is primarily studio-based with a focus on drawing, painting, and printmaking. Whether in the form of cloudscapes, skies reflected in water, or leaves rustling in the wind, Davison is captivated by atmospheric phenomena. "These observational pieces form the setting of explorations into an inner world," reads her artist's statement. "The realm of mythology manifested in the iconographies of various belief systems come alive in her work. The angels of Christendom and the therianthropes of San rock art enact stories that bind us together in the shared realm of the collective unconscious."
While the approach and subject matter of these two artists differ considerably, Findlay and Davison's work joins forces with an unusual, delightful dual exhibition. Points of View shows for one weekend only at the Stokvel Gallery at Melville's 27 Boxes complex from Fri, Oct 25 – Sun, Oct 27. You don't want to miss this.
