Stevenson Gallery presents a new solo exhibition by Mawande Ka Zenzile. For this new body of work that includes paintings, sculptures, and installations, the artist draws inspiration from his travels between Cape Town and Lady Frere in the Eastern Cape.

As the artist explained, his travels between the city of Cape Town and rural Eastern Cape have particularly given him a feeling of freedom and clarity, which he brings across in these new works; "driving down the vast landscape, looking at the horizons, exploring the vastness of the land, the open space ... this gives me a sense of freedom, a sensation of breaking away from the cluttered spaces of township, city or suburb and venturing out – escaping Plato's cave".

At the opening event on Saturday May 14 from 10:00 there is a performance by Larissa Andrea Johnson and a discussion between the artist and writer Themba Tsotsi.
