An annual festive fundraiser for the Streetlight Schools programme which sees amateur and professional artists donating one thousand A5 sketches, doodles, watercolours and drawings that are all on sale for R100 each. This fun charity fundraiser is as much about the amateur and professional artworks on sale as it is about the atmosphere and the location.
Each year the Night of 1000 Drawings event is held in a different unique city location, with this year's venue, the characterful Victoria Yards in east Joburg, among our favourite spaces in the city graces the festival. Providing the entertainment is a selection of local bands while food trucks and pop-up bars further add to the upbeat party atmosphere.
This year's Night of 1000 Drawings festival is spread out over three days, each packed with fun art events. On the opening night look out for the unique competition Art Battle Johannesburg. In this art clash, 16 Gauteng-based artists step up to the drawing table to compete against the clock in three, 20-minute rounds. After each the audience will cast their votes about which is their favourite artwork and a winner will be decided. The champion will then join the South African National Tournament Series with a chance to compete in the national Championship final in October 2020.
The Night of a 1000 Drawings Festival forms part of the Makers Valley Festival, a three-day celebration taking place across the neighbourhoods of Lorenztville, Bez Valley, Bertrams and Troyeville that will include a street parade, placemaking activations and a 'Mega Market'.
