Night by Roadhouse commiserates the closing of iconic 1940s roadhouse The Doll House on Louise Botha Avenue, while celebrating a unique social culture.
Roadhouses became internationally popular through 1980s American pop culture movies. Originally they were combinations of a motel for travellers and a fast-food restaurant. The roadhouse mania spread to South Africa in the 1940s, with roadhouses like The Doll House in Joburg and the Casbah Roadhouse in Pretoria.
Award-winning photographer Marc Shoul and leading arts writer Matthew Krouse started Roadhouse, a series of parties that brings art to a non-gallery audience in novel locations, paired with old-fashioned roadhouse fare.
Night by Roadhouse includes a curated collection of photographic and video works from both local and international artists. The exhibition examines the after-hours; a time of dreams, nightmares and prayers with an evening of great live music from DJs and enough fast food to satisfy the weekend cravings.
