Merle's Schnitz
The famous Merle is the mother of Cape Town restaurateur Yaron Wisenbacher. As he tells it: "It's Merle's recipe, but I wrote it down". Merle's chicken schnitzel found a home away from home when Yaron opened a coffee shop on Cape Town's cool Bree Street six years ago. There was little kitchen space so Merle would make the schnitzel and freeze it for warming up and serving at the store. The schnitzel was served in a sandwich, and was a big hit. And we can see why.
Now an extended family business Merle's Schnitz offers deliver-only in both cities. You can order by the kilo – one, two or three with pricing starting at R330 for a 1 kilo pack (around 8 pieces of schnitzel). And make sure to add two sauces (peri mayo and the spicy but not hot dhania chutney – these are R70 and R60 respectively) which will last for a number of orders.
The schnitzel can go in the oven, microwave or better yet, an airfryer, and in 15 minutes you have crispy coated, super tasty chicken pieces. Our order arrived with four freshly baked Portuguese rolls, and a fresh lemon to add some zestiness. This is the perfect package for an easy meal. It also makes a novel gift.
Deliveries to Joburg's western and southern suburbs are charged at R1 a kilometre, and orders are by WhatsApp. Merle's Schnitz is Halal and deliveries are made with COVID procedures in place – masked, sanitized and contactless.
* Our meal was provided by Merle's Schitz as a taster. But if it wasn't good you wouldn't be reading about it on our page!
