The Jack Ginsberg Centre for Book Arts (JGCBA) at Wits Art Museum (WAM) looks back to look forward with an archival show, Masabelaneni: The Book Arts Archive of the Caversham Press and Centre for Artists and Writers.

The Caversham Press has a rich and decades-long history in South Africa, run by master printmaker Malcolm Christian as the country's first private collaborative printmaking studio, while its Centre for Artists and Writers has been a catalyst for collaborations between local and international artists since the mid-1990s.

Masabelaneni at the JGCBA is a window into a unique and fertile period fo artists' book production found nowhere else in South Africa. Although Caversham has ceased to be a working institution, it editioned many thousands of prints in its day and continues to hold a wealth of information.

The retrospective event opens on Tue, 5 Sep from 18:00 with an address by artist and art historian Dr. Marion Arnold. Visitors may park beneath WAM, accessed via Jorissen Street, for the opening.

The exhibition runs until 15 Dec 2023 at Wits Art Museum's Jack Ginsberg Centre for Book Arts in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.
