Back in June, visual artists Mary Sibande and Lawrence Lemaoana took a live audience through the behind-the-scenes process of creating one of Sibande’s artworks in HOW | Showing the Making: Mary Sibande at The Centre for the Less Good Idea. The deep dive into the art-making process has inspired the duo’s most recent venture, Occupying the Gallery.
A project initiated and launched by Sibande and Lemaoana, and hosted by the print studio Danger Gevaar Ingozi Studio (DGI Studio), Occupying the Gallery reimagines the gallery as a space for works-in-progress. Nine artists working across different media have been invited to activate Gallery 1 at Keyes Art Mile, transforming this space into an open working studio, while developing new visual art ideas. A print portfolio exhibition will emerge In September from this process.
Participating artists: Mary Sibande, Lawrence Lemaoana, Lusanda Ndita, Mosa Anita Kaiser, Nathaniel Sheppard III, Ngoma KaMphahlele, Bongani Ndlovu, Minenkulu Ngoyi and Hoek Swaratlhe.
The gallery is currently open for walk-ins, and while it may not look like it's ready for you we urge you to engage with the artists. The print portfolio exhibition will take place at Gallery 1, Keyes Art Mile from Thur 3 Aug – Fri Sept 1.
