Mame-Diarra Niang: Sama Guent Guii
Oct 8 - Nov 19 2022
46 7th Ave, Parktown North
Sama Guent Guii is Wolof for ‘this dream that I had’ and the exhibition sees Niang delve into the subconscious in order to explore how unknowing is important for becoming. Raised in France, Senegal and the Ivory Coast identity has been a prominent theme in all of Niang's works.
The exhibition features photographs printed on metallic paper and it is in the shimmering and blurring of figures as you move around the exhibit that Niang finds meaning. Speaking on the uncertainty of the portraits on display Niang says, "the forgotten dream is the necessary memory" and as she delves into her past she creates an intricate and multitudinous identity for herself.
There will be an artist walkabout on Sat, Oct 8 at 11:30. Entrance to the exhibition is free.
