It takes big shoes to fill the gap that was left in Joburg's nightlife scene when legendary nightclub Taboo closed its doors. Taboo was a standout, and Joburg's first luxury nightclub, a place where celebrities rubbed shoulders and Champagne flowed by the litre. With the opening of OKIO Nightclub and Bellucci Lounge, owner Sergio Zurini plans to write the next chapter of Joburg's nightlife story in Sandton. Zurini is no stranger to the nightclub scene and has run several popular venues over the years. Zurini's new sister venues fit the profile, situated within the 24 Central complex in upmarket Sandton.
OKIO Nightclub (we were told it's pronounced awk-key-oh) oozes opulence. Aimed at a sophisticated nightlife crowd with high-end means, the design is sleek and the décor vibrant, with standout features that include lavish lounge areas, plush furnishings, a striking marble bar, and unique, custom-designed chandeliers suspended from soaring ceilings.
We attended the grand opening and rubbed shoulders with Joburg's influencers and celebs. Dancers took to the floor in incredible costumes and performed elaborate acrobatic acts above our heads, and, of course, the drinks flowed freely. OKIO has all the trimmings to draw the city's elite who are looking for an elevated night out. Like the world's top nightclubs, access is tiered and all the action happens at or close to your table. Book your table or a VIP suite (public or private) and you'll get personalised bottle service.
OKIO plans to draw the most talented local and international DJs, so the lighting and sound systems are state of the art. Expect high-energy House, Afro House, Afro beats, R&B, and hip-hop on rotation. For the dress code, think elegant and sexy.
Next to OKIO, Bellucci Lounge is a luxury space to start the night with evening cocktails. It's ideal for birthday gatherings and private parties, and is set apart as an elegant escape from the more dynamic club environment next door, with warm, ambient lighting cultivating a relaxed yet refined ambiance. With gourmet tapas and small plates on the menu, paired with exquisite cocktails and an excellent array of whiskies, you might want to settle in.
OKIO Nightclub and Bellucci Lounge, located at 24 Central (corner Gwen Lane and Fredman Drive, Sandton), are open Fri – Sat from 19:00 – 04:00.
