Artist Khaya Witbooi’s first solo exhibition in Joburg, History Begins with a Garden, questions the colonial history of gardens and gardening in South Africa. Viewing gardens as ambiguous spaces that contain both beauty and violence, Witbooi challenges the connections between the country's lush ornamental gardens and South Africa's history of slavery and land dispossession, asking pointed questions like “How is the beauty of South Africa’s nature produced? For Whom? At whose expense?”.

Opening event Thursday March 16 at 18:00.
