Karaoke Kong in Melville

  1 7th Street, Melville ,   Melville          +27 87 821 6981     more than a year ago
Karaoke culture originated in Japan and quickly became a form of entertainment all over the world. The word Karaoke in Japanese translates to "empty orchestra" which is where the fun begins – a recording or soundtrack of a song is played and you get to add the words. Having a melodious voice is not mandatory.

Introducing Karaoke culture to Melville's main street 7th Street is Karaoke Kong. Opened in November 2022 you'll spot the place by the neon colours splashed across it.

In close proximity to two of Joburg's key universities, Wits, and UJ, Karaoke Kong attracts students and academics, and welcomes anyone looking to sing the night away. Situated where Melville Comedy Club used to be, it's hard to miss the large LED Boom box illustration at the shopfront which makes it pretty clear what you're getting yourself into. The design team Kim h nieu has done a stellar job on the funky, bright decor and creating an eclectic atmosphere for this intimate space. Adding cool to the space are the hand-sprayed graffiti tables and the custom-made pink LED light wall feature with backlit retro TV sets.
High colour contributes to the energy of this space

Karaoke Kong’s food menu includes sticky ribs, hot wings, spring rolls, and extra cheesy pizza prepared at close-by neighbours Spilt Milk. We enjoyed signature cocktails from the bar that included a spicy Champagne Supernova. Try the "I Got My Peaches out in Georgia" for something peachy and "Watermelon Sugar High" for something refreshing. The menu also includes classics like Mojitos, Margaritas, and Long Island Iced Teas.

What makes this space special is of course the Karaoke singing. It's simple. Once you've downed a few cocktails you get to enter your Idols era, as a waiter will bring a tablet to your table where you get to pick from golden oldies and current hits across various music genres. Add a cool stage name and you'll join the line-up.

Groups are also welcome to the singing stage

The singing stage has two mics on a stand and is open to soloists, duos, or large groups. We sang along to Beyonce's Ego and what a pleasant surprise it was to have the friendly crowd cheer and sing along. Rest assured, there's no need to be a professional singer to enjoy this. If you're organising a team-building activity, birthday, or any group activity, Karaoke Kong offers group bookings.

An affordable way to enjoy music and entertainment, and a unique reason to visit this neighbourhood.
