Justine Mahoney presents the Joburg version of her exhibition Tainted which premiered in Cape Town last year to much acclaim. Tainted is a series of ten bronze sculptures accompanied by ten corresponding collages. Mahoney's fascination with fantasy, child's play and imagination, overlaid with the sinister realities of our society, make up the overarching theme of the exhibition which is both entertaining and unsettling. Co-director of Southern Guild Julian McGowan aptly describes it as 'Malice in Wonderland'.
Mahoney, who grew up in Joburg's middle class white suburbs during the final decades of apartheid, takes remembered images from her childhood and uses them to reform the past, recalling the fears, dreams, nightmares and aspirations that she experienced as she slowly became aware of the horrors of apartheid that were largely shielded from view in white suburbia.
