This month she guides us to great places for coffee when you have kids in tow.
Munch Cafe, Bryanston
This unpretentious gem in Bryanston is tucked away in The Garden Shop on Main Road. Munch Cafe offers their own coffee blends, freshly baked bread and for families, an outdoor kids area with a jungle gym, and seating overlooking the nursery area that catches the morning sun. The kiddies menu options such as French toast, pancakes, toasted cheese, and Babycinos are sure to be a hit.

From Ground Up, Fourways
A lovely family-friendly cafe just off busy Witkoppen Road in Fourways with a large outdoor area and a recently renovated kids area and jungle gym. From Ground Up has incredible speciality coffee, stocking Beethoven coffee, one of the best coffee roasters in South Africa, while the cakes are from Chateau Gateaux. For something more substantial they also serve breakfast, and a light lunch menu – the kiddies have a variety of toast options, crumpets and fruit, as well as babycinos. What we love most about the space is the decor, the large outdoor area, and friendly service. A wonderful spot to grab a sandwich and a good cup of coffee in a relaxed and stylish space, while the kids play safely outside.
Where: 267 Market Street (cnr Witkoppen Rd), Fourways
DC Coffee, Pineslopes
A quirky and colourful coffee shop in the Pineslopes centre in Fourways. While it may not have a conventional kiddies area, DC Coffee is full of fun for kids and adults. Babycinos and plenty of board games, such as noughts and crosses, chess and dominoes, will keep young ones busy. They also have plenty of space to park a stroller or two. Staff are incredibly friendly, there is comfortable seating areas and Wi-Fi and DC Coffee is also dog-friendly. Be sure to try their famous jaffles, and cheesecake.

Fab Diner, Linden
A retro diner-themed coffee shop in Linden. Fab Diner offers a range of gelato, breakfast, and brunch options, and coffee from 4th Avenue Coffee Roasters, a Johannesburg favourite. Kids can choose from unique gelato flavours such as bubblegum, black vanilla, cotton candy or milk tart, and will love ordering from the ice-cream counter resembling the bonnet of a Chevrolet. Also on the menu are waffles, nachos, and a variety of baked goodies. Fun for kids and adults alike, with delicious coffee and a cool atmosphere.
Where: 71 7th St, Linden
Green Bean Roastery, Muldersdrift
Green Bean Coffee Roastery is a gem on Casalinga Farm in Muldersdrift. Situated on a working farm, this is a wonderful spot to grab a coffee and slice of cake while the kids explore the wide open spaces. On the menu is a variety of toasted sandwiches, cakes, and baked goods. This is a great way to escape the busyness of Joburg, and spend time walking through fruit orchards, a small forest area, as well as relaxed on the sprawling lawns. We’d recommend grabbing a takeaway, bringing a picnic blanket, and enjoying a morning away from the hustle and bustle of the city with the family.
Where: Casalinga Organic Farm, Plot 328 Rocky Ridge Rd, Beyers Naudé Dr (turn off opposite Garden World), Muldersdrift
Ground Cafe, Muldersdrift
The perfect spot for a family weekend outing. Ground Cafe is part of Ground Venue (a popular wedding venue), and has a large garden, spacious veranda, a full breakfast and lunch menu and a lovely deli offering goodies to take home. The coffee is by Naked Coffee and ice cream by Paul’s Homemade Ice Cream. Kids will love the open space, blossoming garden, and babycinos, and adding to the friendliness, pets are also welcome.
