Celebrating the inner city’s booming dining scene, this walking tour led by the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation visits some of the oldest neighbourhoods in the Joburg city centre in search of the many new gastronomic delights on offer there. The tour starts at the 1 Fox Precinct, a cluster of restored and repurposed warehouses that date back to 1893 and are now home to a food hall-style market, craft brewery, trendy bars and restaurants. From the old John Vorster Square on the opposite side of the road, the location of one of the most notorious police stations in the apartheid era, the tour then walks through Joburg's old Chinatown including a stop at the oldest restaurant in the city, Swallow Inn.

From here the walk traces a path through Joburg's struggle history on its way towards the historic Main Street mining district, stopping at places associated with leaders such as Ahmed Kathrada, Nelson Mandela and Walter Sisulu and paying a visit to some of the new cafes and bars that have made their home in the historic mining district's grand Edwardian and Art Deco buildings. The tour ends back at the 1 Fox Precinct where there are lots of places to grab lunch.
