Dubbed the "panto queen of South Africa" by Theatre Lives, Janice Honeyman uses the art of pantomime to help audiences learn to laugh at themselves. She has been creating comedy out of everyday events for the past 30 years, and her pantomimes have become a yearly delight in Joburg. Honeyman is also a founding member of The Company at the Market Theatre in Newtown, and works as a writer and creator of English and Afrikaans theatre. She can do it all: from drama and comedy to political satire, Honeyman's unique take on storytelling has won her several awards.
For 2024, Honeyman brings the beloved fairytale Beauty and the Beast to the stage. Using her gift for writing hilarious scripts (parental guidance is advised!), she expertly weaves humour into the classic tale of Belle, a bookish princess who falls in love with a fearful "beast". Honeyman's retelling, Beauty, the Beast and the Enchanted Castle, features dazzling costumes, interesting choreography, and delightful music that will transport you to a world of magic and enchantment. The pantomime also features engaging audio-visual effects and some new characters who put that special Honeyman spin on the story.
We loved watching the performance on Sun, Nov 3. With countless renditions of this iconic tale, one becomes hard-pressed to imagine a fresh take, but the cast of about 20 performers effortlessly deliver the comedy Honeyman is known for and they have a marvellous stage presence. The costumes are cheerful and vibrant, and the cool set changes reaffirm the theatrics of it all. Though South African social and political satirical jokes peppered throughout the show may go over the kids' heads, the crowd singalongs and interactions make it a fabulously fun outing for the entire family.
