#JacarandaInYourPocket 2023 Wrap-up: Andticks, Banditz Bicycle Club social ride and Villa Arcadia photowalk

more than a year ago
To celebrate Gauteng's annual jacaranda spring, Johannesburg In Your Pocket teamed up with Gautrain – the best way to travel between two jacaranda cities. #YourGautrainJourneyStartsHere. Each spring, we host a #jacarandainyourpocket photo competition and event series to showcase the most beautiful time of year in Gauteng.

As part of our event series for 2023 we curated an exclusive evening shopping experience at the Andticks concept store, a social ride with Banditz Bicycle Club and a photowalk at Villa Arcadia. It was jam-packed but there's no other way we'd have it. In total, we hosted seven events with more than 270 people attending.

ANDTICKS SHOPPING EXPERIENCE

We kicked of our last #JacarandaInYourPocket 2023 week with a bang on Wed, Oct 25, hosting an exclusive soirée at the Andticks pop-up store. Culinary genius Andrea Burgener from The Leopard whipped up some chic canapés with exquisite wines courtesy of the maestro Bruce Jack. With a mere 30 of us, Andticks swung open those oh-so-exclusive doors for an evening of shopping, food and music.

The concept store is your oyster, every Thu – Sun until Nov 26. Andticks has taken over a stunning heritage gem in Parktown, transforming it into a paradise of delights for a solid six weeks. Expect special shindigs for curious kids, crafty creatives and food fanatics. Find out what's on the programme for the coming week here

We strolled through the jacaranda-draped gardens as the sun set and of course, indulged in some of the local labels on offer. Read our list of cool brands to look out for at Andticks.

We explored every nook and cranny of this heritage house-turned-showroom wonderland, falling head over heels for some of our favourite local brands like Guillotine and Ifuku while stumbling upon some new shopping obsessions. Each room is a curated treasure trove of local fashion, art and homeware from across the country.

As the night wound down, we mingled and chatted while being treated to sinfully sweet desserts from La Tarte. Oh, and you know we're all about the unique and unexpected. We were serenaded by the musician Muneyi, who spins enchanting Tshivenda folk tales into modern melodies.

BANDITZ BICYCLE CLUB SOCIAL RIDE

Riding on the high of winning the 2023 Rugby World Cup, we headed to Rosebank on a bright Sunday morning (Oct 29, 2023) for a social ride with Banditz Bicycle Club in collaboration with the Rosebank Management District. We arrived early at voco Hotel The Bank and with it being our second year of collaborating with the hotel, of course, they did not disappoint. They treated us to complimentary coffee and pastries, so we could fuel up before our ride through the tree-lined streets of the neighbourhood.

We were given an introduction by instructors from Banditz Bicycle Club before our ride with some safety tips and more information about our route. Joined by Girls on Bikes, Street Friends and Young Urbanists, rounded off our group to 50 people taking to the streets of Rosebank and cycling through the jacaranda-lined neighbouring suburbs. With jacaranda blooms sticking to our bicycle tyres we ended off the ride back in Rosebank.

Rosebank has seen many changes in the last couple of years, transforming it into a bustling economic and cultural district, but with such innovation the idea of making it a more accessible, walkable and bike-friendly district has become a hot topic of discussion. Our event was supported by the Rosebank Management District, Oxford Parks and Young Urbanists to work towards that goal.

VILLA ARCADIA

For our last #JacarandaInYourPocket event for 2023, we teamed up with Hollard, the premier purple brand to curate a photowalk for 25 people in the Hollard team and 25 photographers invited by us. The experience was designed to showcase heritage, art and jacarandas at Villa Arcadia, a historic property on the Hiollard campus.

Villa Arcadia, originally a Randlords mansion, was once the home of Lady Florence and mining magnate Sir Lionel Phillips who gave life to culture and art in early Johannesburg. Lady Florence was the founder of the Johannesburg Art Gallery and some of its historical possessions are part of her original collection given to the city.

Our guests were hosted by the intrepid Kennedy Tembo of Microadventure Tours and treated to a High Tea by La Tarte Pâtisserie accompanied by gin and tonics from Ginologist, a distillery based at the historic mining compound at 1 Fox in Ferreirasdorp. With all of our events, Johannesburg In Your Pocket makes it our mission to support small local businesses in the city – and we have a whole lot of fun doing it.
