A culmination of director Alex Halligey's doctoral research, Izithombe 2094 (izithombe means "pictures" in Zulu) is a site specific play performed on the streets of Joburg, based on the real experiences of people living in the city's historic eastern suburbs of Bertrams, Lorentzville and Judith's Paarl. It is the story of the people, told by the people, blurring the lines between theatre and reality, and brought to life by actresses Lindiwe Matshikiza and Toni Morkel, who have both have a personal history with the area. Morkel and Matshikiza act as guides and anchors for the play which is told as part of a walk through the streets with local participants, and stories, drawn from places on route such as Bertrams Junior School and the Bienvenue Refugee Shelter for Women and Children.

A unique theatre and tour experience, Izithombe 2094 elevates the intimate realities of local people into a form of public art. The play also includes an exhibition at Twilsharp Studios.

Tickets are on a pay-what-you-can basis. Booking is essential. Email bertramsstoriesproject@gmail.com to book. Sunblock, hats, umbrellas and water are advisable.
