Itsoseng is a town in the North West province that was integrated into the Bophuthatswana Bantustan under the Apartheid homeland system. Under the leadership of the 'President' of Bophuthatswana, Lucas Mangope, Itsoseng enjoyed a period of rapid prosperity during homeland rule, although the dubious roots of this sudden economic boom were seldom questioned by residents.
Taking a stark look at the harsh realities of life in post-Apartheid South African townships, Itsoseng explores the spaces where politics and violence merge and manifest in daily lives. Itsoseng, which means ‘wake yourself up’, paints a compelling portrait of a young man who is desperate for change in an impoverished community that lacks basic services like proper schooling, sanitation and housing. Originally a one-man play, for this production Itsoseng returns to the stage as an ensemble piece with seven actors.
