Just in time for the arrival of spring, that most optimistic and colourful of South African seasons, Strauss & Co presents its latest exclusive virtual live auction.

The auction streams live online at straussart.co.za on Tue Sep 14 from 18:00 and is accompanied by a fantastic exhibition, now on show at Strauss & Co's Johannesburg Gallery and showroom in Houghton.

Titled Impression / Expression, the spring auction is a tightly curated single session collection of 90 lots. The art featured in this exclusive virtual live auction is all created by South African artists, including 20th Century icons JH Pierneef and Irma Stern. Also featured are five historic South African wines, among them the famous 1821 vintage of Grand Constance, South Africa’s oldest and most illustrious wine brand.

Alastair Meredith from Strauss & Co's art department explains that the art collection in the sale was chosen and hung in the gallery space to highlight their similarities and differences, and to give context to the stylistic and conceptual shifts that have taken place in this country over the past century.

"Impressionist pictures, for instance, can capture the transience of light, can be stirred by modernity, and in pursuit of atmospheric sensation. Many expressionist works, moreover, are made with instinct, are defined by intimacy, and drawn to visual anarchy. The works are presented with these often overlapping attributes in mind.”

In addition to major 20th Century names the likes of Maggie Laubser, Hugo Naudé and Walter Battiss, the Impression / Expression sale also features some exciting newer works by contemporary women artists including Maaike Bakker, Io Makandal, Yolanda Mazwana, Lucy Jane Turpin and Kylie Wentzel.

How a Strauss & Co Live Virtual Auction works

Strauss & Co's innovative cross-country and cross-departmental format is a clever re-imagining of the classic live auction model. The auction is hosted 'live' (virtually) in Cape Town and Joburg with Strauss & Co's auctioneers on the podium, streamed live via Strauss & Co’s website in real-time.

To join in the bidding online, first create an account by registering on the Strauss & Co website. Sign in and select 'enter auction' which will open the bidding console on your computer with a live feed of the auctioneer. Once you submit a bid, your number will appear on the screen followed by any competing bidding numbers until the auctioneer closes the lot. Browse the auction and register to bid online here.

In addition to bidding live online, you can also still submit phone bids with Strauss & Co's team manning the phones in the room, or submit a 'commission' bid before detailing the ceiling amount for which you would like to bid for a work (you will 'win' your bid if no other bidders exceed your pre-set limit).
