Hasan and Husain Essop - Refuge

Jul 15 - Aug 19 2017 163 Jan Smuts Ave, Parkwood
share
Twin brothers Hasan and Husain Essop’s clever and engrossing photos question Muslim stereotypes and critically engage with the climate of fear and uncertainty that currently dominates global political discourse. In this new exhibition the twins turn their focus to the Middle Eastern refugee crisis, told from the perspective of young Muslims in South Africa. Raised in the Cape Flats, the Essops draw parallels between the forced removals in South Africa, which includes their family, and the refuge crisis asking the provocative question “what constitutes refuge?”.

Thu Aug 3: The gallery will be staying open late this Thursday as part of the monthly First Thursdays event. Drop by from 18:00 to see the exhibition and view a new film by South African artist Minette Vári.
