Group exhibition: 'Pretty Brilliant' at Berman Contemporary

223 Jan Smuts Avenue, Rosebank, Johannesburg
New works in sculpture by ceramicist and visual storyteller Amogelang Maepa are part of the group show, who says, "My sculptures are fused with poetry, drawn from my personal experiences – they portray the more intimate and honest parts of myself. The poems are there to ignite a connection with the audience and, at the same time, spark a conversation."
Visual art activist Athenkosi Kwinana centres her practice on representing Persons with Albinism (PWA) in South Africa, challenging stigmas and social prejudices. "As an individual with Albinism, I utilise an autoethnographic approach, intertwining my personal narrative and those of individuals with Albinism with my artistic inquiry," Kwinana says. "I hope to stimulate deeper awareness and encourage dialogue that leads to tangible change in how PWA are perceived and treated in South Africa and beyond."
Human intimacy and interaction are at the heart of Odette Graskie's work, which begins as temporary connections with the public through portrait sessions. These hand-drawn pieces are then cut, torn, and sewn together, exploring the sculptural qualities of paper. "I am focussed on looking closer and questioning what happens when we alter the limitations of our everyday interactions," says Graskie.
Chrisél Attewell, Cow Mash, DuduBloom More, Hazel Mphande, Lee-At Meyerov, Mellaney Roberts, and Natalie de Morney also have work in Pretty Brilliant, showing at Berman Contemporary's gallery space at 223 Jan Smuts.
