Conceived by Ojiji and supported by the Little Artists School, the Pieces of Our Dream project connects young creators with experienced artists who guide them through interactive classes and creative discussions. Central to the collaborative process, children are encouraged to think beyond traditional career goals, exploring desired futures of profound personal significance, such as fostering more meaningful relationships with their loved ones.
These intangible hopes spring to life as the children visualise their aspirations and translate them into imaginative artworks. It's a project that is a testament to the transformative power of art, while the works are woven through with heartfelt and diverse stories of personal discovery and growth.
In this exhibition, established artists Edward Selematsela, Sbusiso Mendlula, Luwice Muziti, Lucas Kumba, Hendrick Kgosana, Nditsheni Managa, and Buhle Hlatshwayo exhibit their work alongside pieces by art students at the Little Artists School.
About the organisers
Little Artists School was founded in 1995 by social entrepreneur and South African fine artist Selematsela, who worked as a child and youth caregiver in an orphanage in Joburg's City Centre. Seeing children entertain themselves after school by vandalising cars and stealing radios in and around the city, he decided to try to get them off the streets and so created a new avenue for them – art. To begin with, his inspired project had him teaching art to 25 to 30 youngsters at the Little Artists School, and the initiative has gone from strength to strength ever since.Ojiji develops customised art projects and exhibitions that connect young, disadvantaged artists to businesses and brands, giving youthful talent the tools and know-how to flourish, grow and succeed.
