Folklore Fringe at Leano Stage

Folklore Fringe is the launch event for the upcoming Folklore Festival happening on Oct 1 at the National School of the Arts. It will feature SAMA-award winning artist Pilani Bubu giving an exclusive preview of her upcoming album Folklore Chapter 2. Pilani Bubu has also enlisted Lesotho native Leomile, who weaves complex sounds to create folktales which linger long after the music has stopped, and guitarist and singer Muneyi, who explores his Venda heritage with rich combinations of Tshivenda folktales and modern sounds.

Folklore Fringe and the Folklore Festival are put together by the Folklore Community, an organisation commited to documenting and celebrating stories and music that have previously been undocumented or destroyed. Folklore Fringe offers the perfect introduction to their work.

Speaking on her new album Bubu says "This album explores the journey of how an African child aligns with her calling and purpose by understanding her inheritances and gifts through connection and consent with elders and ancestors. Exploring the conversation through African spirituality, divination, and knowledge transfer. This project came to me intuited, inspired and composed in my dreamscapes – both night and day, consciously and subconsciously."

If you’re stuck with no Friday plans, or are perhaps now thinking of cancelling them,  head to Leano Stage for a night of thoughtful music. If you can’t make it this Friday don’t fret as the Folklore Festival will be kicking off on Oct 1, more on that can be found here.

Tickets are R200 online and R300 at the door.
