Said to be the biggest haberdashery in South Africa, this huge store, located in the heart of Joburg’s historic garment district is frequented by amateur and professional tailors, seamstresses and boutique owners and supplies goods to small-scale clothing factories. The store shares a building with Studio 109, a popular destination for locals working in the fashion industry that stocks one of the widest selections of shweshwe prints (a printed cotton fabric used in African traditional dress). Opposite is a rejuvenated city square, Fashion Kapitol, the place to head for Pan-African style inspiration and shopping. Not a conventional shopping mall – this is a hub for fashion talent and with a college nearby, it becomes an outdoor catwalk on Saturdays, showcasing the students’ latest designs.
