We strongly urge you to take up membership, as the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation does incredible work to protect the city's heritage. The foundation also offers a number of members-only events.

The Oldest School In Joburg – Exploring St Mary’s
Established in 1888, St Mary’s School was founded to provide education for the daughters of the Anglican community. Over its 136-year history, the school has undergone relocation three times, with each site contributing significantly to its legacy. Alison Andrew leads the tour, starting at the St Mary’s Waverley campus, which has been its operational base for the past 90 years. Delve into the school’s origins by exploring its first two locations in Jeppestown and traverse the picturesque suburb of Waverley. It includes a visit to Taynuilt, the Herbert Baker house, that maintains enduring links to St Mary’s. A Heritage Hike of Linksfield Ridge and Harvey Nature Reserve
The defining geological characteristic of Joburg is its ridges. This well-loved heritage hike will take you along the iconic Linksfield Ridge through the Harvey Nature Reserve and provide breathtaking views of Kensington and Orange Grove. Led by David Fleminger, the hike showcases a rich diversity of bird and plant life, with intriguing historical anecdotes shared, and you'll get to explore a geological heritage dating back three billion years. The experience also presents excellent photo opportunities, while shedding light on the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation's collaborative efforts with Johannesburg City Parks to reclaim and preserve the ridge. The route is 5km with deep inclines and declines and is recommended for those who are moderately fit. You're encouraged to wear good hiking shoes or boots. Bring sun protection, water, and snacks.
