Johannesburg has a dynamic contemporary art scene and its many private galleries are all free to visit and on opening nights (which are usually held on Thursdays), offer opportunities to meaningfully interact with local artists, a glass of wine in hand. Many also schedule Saturday morning art walkabouts.
Jan Smuts Avenue, between Wells and Jellicoe Avenues in Parkwood, is Joburg's gallery row. Braamfontein and Maboneng are also worth visiting for their galleries and artist studios - don't miss Braamfontein's First Thursdays social art evening where all the area's galleries open late. See our Joburg's Art Scene section for a full guide to Johannesburg's many art galleries and to use our interactive art gallery map.
