An exhibition of abstract paintings and paint sculptures, (e)mersion by Claire Lichtenstein is on show at Candice Berman Gallery at 223 Jan Smuts Creative Hub in Rosebank.

The exhibition, (e)mersion, is inspired by the serene and raw landscape of the Western Cape town of Wilderness, where painter Claire Lichtenstein lives. Drawing out the title, the artist explores themes of immersion, emerging, and emotion. Lichtenstein is deeply connected to both painting and her surroundings, which is reflected in her work. She says, "In many ways, Wilderness and painting are mirrors for each other – places where I am free to explore, express, and create. Each holds a piece of my story, and together they bring me closer to discovering who I truly am".

In addition to her paintings, Lichtenstein presents a collection of paint sculptures entitled Flowers That Grow from Difficult Places. Created out of a personal trauma, this series illuminates her journey of growth and healing. She takes her cue from the role that flowers play in the depiction of Hamlet's Ophelia, reshaping the character's narrative of innocence, beauty, and tragedy, and transforming it into a beacon of strength and renewal. "These works are like spells – speaking the truth – both for myself and others," Lichtenstein explains. The exhibition also features work by painter Belinda Ross.

See (e)mersion at Candice Berman Gallery, on the ground floor of 223 Jan Smuts Creative Hub. The closing date is yet to be announced; follow @candicebermangallery on Instagram for updates.
