Chelsea Selvan: 'With Feeling' at Gallery 2
Saturday Aug 31 - Saturday Sep 28
142 Jan Smuts Ave, Parkwood
ABSA L’Atelier award-winning artist Chelsea Selvan's work explores what she calls the "fugitive nature of memory", rendering intangible feelings and tangible objects alike through seemingly abstract means. Fluid colour fields characterise her prints; some of these are carefully graded while others are more painterly in appearance. Regardless, these form the backdrop for Selvan's dynamic compositions which feature floating geometric forms and calligraphic mark-making.
"These configurations are a tentative notion of her fleeting thoughts and an echo of architectural spaces that have imprinted themselves in her mental and emotional fabric," reads her artist statement. "Be it their sheer materiality; a crumbling window, a rusty pressed seeling, or a corroding old door," or, on the other hand, "the intangible; wind blowing through a space or the shafts of late afternoon light."
Head to Gallery 2 on Sat, Aug 31 from 11:00 for the opening of Selvan's solo, With Feeling, with an opening speech by her mentor Karel Nel. The exhibition runs until Sat, Sep 28.
