Happy birthday Sandton City! It's been 50 years since opening in 1973, and in that time Sandton City has become one of Africa's premier shopping destinations with an astounding 300-plus local and international stores.

On Tue, Sep 12 Sandton City will celebrate its 50th birthday with a day of shopping, exclusive deals, free parking, extended trading hours and live performances from top local musicians.

There will be an unveiling of the History Wall installation on the fourth level of the mall in celebration of this milestone, and you'll get a glimpse the centre's development from the ground up and how it has managed to stay at the forefront of retail in Africa.

If music is where you show your support, then you'll probably enjoy the musical stylings of a heavyweight line-up that includes DJ Zinhle, Goodluck, Holly Rey, DJ Soosh and SPHEctacula and DJ Naves from 12:00 until 22:00 in the centre court outside Checkers. While you're enjoying the sounds of celebration you can also enter a spend-and-win competition where you stand the chance to win a R50 000 gift card if you've spent R500 or more at any Sandton City store from now until Tue, Sep 12.

And of course, it wouldn't be a Sandton City celebration if there wasn't shopping involved. Not only will trading hours be extended on Tuesday to 21:00, you'll be able to enjoy plenty of discounts and complimentary gifts from 90 of the centre's shops. Included in the special offers: a free t-shirt with any jacket purchase at Alpha Industries, 50% off anything for the first 50 customers at Fabiani, and a free brow tint from UniQ Brows plus so much more.
