Botho Project Space at Botho House

160 Eloff St, Selby ,   City Centre         more than a year ago
Botho Projects Space is an extraordinary artist-run and led Pan-African gallery space housed in a building in the light industrial district of Selby on the edge of the city centre. Opened late 2020, it shares space in the building with the studio of world-renowned artist Nelson Makamo and the headquarters of fashion designer Laduma Ngxokolo's Maxhosa label. The project is an initiative of a powerful cultural trio that includes DJ Black Coffee.

The name "Botho" comes from the Setswana language, and means 'humanity' – part of a philosophy which refers to the attributes of being a human being, and incorporates the spirit of ubuntu, care for others. The space is envisioned as being part of a cultural community and as having a role in nurturing and building this spirit in the city.

The gallery space is an impressive white cube that looks across the industrial landscape of Selby, a multi-purpose venue and events space, led by artistic director and photographer Musa Nxumalo.
