In his latest exhibition Blessing Ngobeni continues his preoccupation with oppression and the enslavement of the mind, taking a look back at history and the errors made by past generations. In his large scale, multi-layered canvases Ngobeni uses paint and collage to combine images from magazines and media with intense figurative characters, reflecting the complexities of the current socio-political climate. Richly detailed, visually striking and often shocking, Ngobeni's paintings mix the good and the bad of society, our passions and depressions, triumphs and tribulations and explore deep and often uncomfortable questions about the achievements and failures of South Africa's young democracy. Both stimulating and occasionally terrifying, Ngobeni's distinctive works present the viewer with much to think about and plenty of room for interpretation.
