!Kauru Contemporary Art and Constitution Hill, with the support of the department of arts and culture, present this groundbreaking group exhibition of works by leading female African artists. An examination of the historical and contemporary understandings of what it means to be a woman in contemporary Africa, the exhibition reflects on the myth-making that has surrounded the African female body in both traditional and contemporary contexts and the ways in which modern African womxn see themselves.

The list of artists whose works feature in the exhibition is a veritable who's who of the African art scene. Prominent artists taking part in the exhibition include Aida Muluneh (Ethiopia) known for her richly coloured self-portrait photography, Nandipha Mntambo, Dineo Seshee Bopape, French-born Guyanese-Danish digital media artist Tabita Rezaire, Egyptian-American artist Ghada Amer, whose complex embroidered paintings have found their way onto the walls of London's Gagosian Gallery and multi-award winning South African photographer and LGBTI activist Zanele Muholi. Also featured are images taken from The Salooni Project (pictured), a Ugandan conceptual art installation that illustrates the complex politics surrounding African women's hair and how it is styled.

Opening event Wednesday May 10 at 18:00.
Exhibition walkabout Saturday May 13 at 11:00.
Late night opening on Thursday June 1 from 17:00 in partnership with Locrate Market.
