Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival

Taking place ahead of the 40th anniversary of the June 16 youth protests in Soweto (now marked nationwide as the Youth Day public holiday), this month-long festival is a celebration of South African youth culture through art, music, fashion and film. Now in its 4th year the festival is curated by the hip Braamfontein gallery Kalashnikovv with the help of the Constitution Hill heritage precinct who are hosting all of the festival's events. <strong>Note that entrance to <em>all</em> Basha Uhuru events is free</strong>.<br /> <br /> <strong>Opens June 2 at 18:00 (on display throughout June) <em>Expressions of Freedom </em></strong><br /> The Women's Jail and the Old Fort will host works by young South African artists working in a variety of mediums, which explore what it is to be young and creative in South Africa at this time in History. The works also reflect the country’s current contemplation of issues of gender, popular culture, sub culture, politics, access to information and identity across race. The exhibitions are on show throughout June.<br /> <br /> <strong>June 9 at 19:00 <em>Visions of Freedom (Pt. 1) – Film Screenings​ - </em></strong>Necktie Youth and The People vs The Rainbow Nation.<br /> <br /> <strong>June 15 at 18:00 <em>Visions of Freedom (Pt. 2) – Theatre Production Performative! </em></strong>An evening of theatre and performance art, spoken word poetry and animation.<br /> <br /> <strong>June 18 at 16:00 <em>Conversations of Freedom (Pt. 1) – Design Share Party Creative Networking</em></strong><br /> <br /> <strong>June 22 at 16:00 <em>Conversations of Freedom (Pt. 2) – Panel Discussion on Free Education</em></strong><br /> <br /> <strong>June 25, starts at 09:00 </strong><em><strong>Rides of Freedom: Heritage Cycling Tour & Time Travel Tour</strong></em><br /> A mass cycle ride from the Hector Pieterson Museum in Soweto to Constitution Hill. <br /> <br /> <strong>June 25 from 10:00 <em>Sounds of Freedom: Market @ The Fort & Basha Uhuru Music Concert</em></strong><br /> A free music festival featuring a host of popular South African bands including major names like Thandiswa Mazwai, Reason, BLK JKS, Moonchild and Kenzhero, complemented by the monthly Market@The Fort event where you can find a great array of food stalls, books and fashion.
