Banele Khoza: 'What's left unsaid' at Goodman Gallery
Thursday Sep 5 - Thursday Sep 26
163 Jan Smuts Ave, Parkwood
Shown together for the first time in Johannesburg, Goodman Gallery exhibits watercolour paintings by artist and gallerist Banele Khoza. The ever-evolving series that these works are drawn from was initiated by Khoza in 2013. What's left unsaid opens ahead of Khoza's inclusion in the September group show, Pause, at Frac Lorraine in France.
The uneasy, perhaps familiar tension that arises between individuals who are unable to articulate vulnerable thoughts or feelings because of distance, time, or other circumstances is central to Khoza's ongoing project. The artist explores this subject matter through portraits, and particularly self-portraits – a practice he finds both challenging and therapeutic. Khoza says, "I have been afraid to look at myself as the subject. One usually places an emphasis on other people to escape oneself or as a way to shy from seeing their beauty. The self-portraits in the show are a reflection of an environment none are a witness to except for the self. I am encouraged to explore this space as it holds an authentic reflection and reveals mark-making I can’t find while looking outside of myself."
See What's left unsaid in Goodman Gallery's Viewing Room space until Thu, Sep 26. In the main section of the gallery, a collaborative group show with blank projects titled alluvium runs until Sat, Sep 28.
