Sibya moves beyond conventional representations of black and femme subjects, and counters narratives of poverty and struggle. His work is opulent and dynamic, described as "a visual rebellion that balances chaos and order". Making generous use of colours, textures, and patterns drawn from music, dance, and fashion subcultures, his style is immediately recognisable. The figures in his portraits have a regal air, marked by their beauty, dignity, and strength.
The few works we saw in the run-up to this exhibition at Everard Read's RMB Latitudes art fair stand were divine, and we can't wait for the full showcase. Join Sibiya for an artist walkabout at the opening of Ngemva Kokuqubuka on Sat, Jun 1 from 11:00.
