At Your Doorstep at the Market Theatre [Vor Deiner Tür] – a contemporary opera

One of the most exciting productions to cross our path in 2023, At Your Doorstep/ Vor Deiner Tür is a one-of-a-kind collaborative contemporary opera and musical theatre show with music from South African and Swiss composers, and input from young people in Hillbrow and Bielefeld, Germany.

This production, in partnership with the Germany Embassy in South Africa, Flame Studios and ASSITEJ South Africa is a musical theatre work suitable for everyone that explores political concerns, family relationships and the hopes for happiness of young people on two continents.

At Your Doorstep at The Market Theatre — July Zuma in At Your Doorstep / Vor Deiner Tür at The Market Theatre – a one of a kind production

Johannesburg and Bielefeld audiences will experience this opera simultaneously as it will be streamed in both cities from March 29 until April 5 2023 at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg and Theater Bielefeld in Germany.

At Your Doorstep is a chamber opera in two parts with the music created by South African composer Matthew MacFarlane and Swiss composer Marc L. Vogler, with a libretto and direction by Robert Lehmeier.

The production explores virtual friendships and relationships against the backdrop of racial and class tensions and the potential dangers of online engagement. At Your Doorstep was crafted out of practical participatory processes that saw young people attend libretto workshops at the the Windybrow Arts Centre in Hillbrow and the Muth Musiktheater Jugendclub in Bieleveld.

The storyline involves 4 characters:
Brother (played by tenor, July Zuma) and Sister (played by soprano, Nokuthula Magubane) who have crossed many African borders and find themselves in Hillbrow, Johannesburg
A young girl (played by soprano, Mayan Goldenfeld) struggling with anxiety disorder living with her mother (played by mezzo, Nohad Becker) in Bielefeld.
The two young girls connect online and become friends.

The singers will be accompanied by chamber orchestras from South Africa and Germany. Expect to see and gain greater insight into the fears, hopes and expectations of young people, the challenges of social media and online friendships and what happens when someone decides to leave their online bubble and the virtual becomes real.
