Chef Ishvara Dhyan specialises in city culinary walks with a focus on diverse cultures. His tours include a spice walk in Fordsburg, exploring Asian culture in Cyrildene’s Chinatown, Ethiopian Culture in the city centre, and a walkabout of African traditional culture. He palces an emphasis on food as culture and offers a range of cooking classes focusing on Asian and Middle Eastern cuisines. He'll also impart secrets about where to source exotic ingredients locally.
Walking tours start from R100 and up to 50 people can attend. The programme varies monthly. Private tours of up to four hours in length are offered for a fixed price of R2,250 regardless of the number of attendees.
Dhyan also runs cookery courses under the Ancient Secrets brand.
On Sat, Jul 6 from 10:00 – 13:00, you can explore the rich tapestry of Fordsburg's spice shops with Dyan as your guide. Learn more about Arabic, Indian, and Turkish communities through recipes, ingredients, and street food tastings. Interesting stops include a Hindu prayer shop, a Pakistani sweet shop, an Ayurvedic herbal medicine shop, a Baklava shop, and more. Conclude with lunch at a traditional Arabic, Indian, or Turkish restaurant (at your own expense), with complimentary food tastings along the way. It’s a cultural and culinary adventure not to be missed.
Tickets are R350 p.p. and for kids under 12, R175 p.p. Attendees are to meet at Turkish Grill 52 Central Road, Fordsburg.
