Africa Umoja is an award-winning spectacular of South African song and dance that has played in over 50 countries. With energetic and idiosyncratically African choreography, music and dazzling costumes, the show is a journey through African musical history from the rhythms of tribal music to the swinging jazz of 1950s Sophiatown and the urban vitality of kwaito.

Since first debuting in South African theatres the cast of Africa Umoja have elevated this much loved production to the next level with a creative storyline that highlights the history of South Africa through song and dance, leaving the audience feeling uplifted and energised.

The story starts out in a traditional village in KwaZulu Natal where cultural costume and dance are brought to the fore before moving on to the urban setting of Durban, following the migration of South African villagers into the growing cities. From here the action moves to Joburg, 'The city of Gold', where people from all over the country came to make their fortune.

Following the journey of a young Zulu man who arrives in Joburg and experiences apartheid's discriminative dompas laws and police harassment. We then see and hear the swinging jazz of Sophiatown, the anger and bravery of the Soweto uprising and Joburg's melting pot of African cultures and religions, all captivatingly illustrated with a kaleidoscope of beautiful costumes and both upbeat and sad songs that pull at the heart strings.

By the end of the show we were left feeling very proud to be South African and truly appreciative of the remarkable journey of where we came from to where we are now.
