A Celebration of Bra Hugh Masekela

Thursday May 3 - Sunday May 6       163 Civic Blvd, Braamfontein
share
A tribute to the late South African jazz legend, A Celebration of Bra Hugh Masekela shines a light on a lesser-known aspect of Masekela’s long and illustrious career; his musicals. In his early days, the world-renowned jazz trumpeter and songwriter was involved in the productions of iconic apartheid-era musicals such as the African Jazz and Variety road show and King Kong and he was also one of the creative minds behind South Africa’s most successful musical Sarafina. His later works include the satirical musical Songs of Migration, which opened to critical acclaim in South Africa, America and Europe, and the more recent Gone Native: The Life and Times of Regina Brooks.

The Celebration of Bra Hugh Masekela evening promises to bring together all the favourite hits from Sarafina, Songs of Migration, Gone Native and other classics as performed by South African musical legend Sibongile Khumalo, jazz-funk rebel singer Thandiswa Mazwai and members of Masekela’s touring band.
